Private appointmentsAbout Colonoscopy
What is it and when is it done?
Colonoscopy examines the whole large bowel and removes polyps. It is the key test for early detection of bowel cancer: recommended from age 50, for blood in stool, changed bowel habits and anaemia.
How long does it take?
20–45 minutes; 2–3 hours in total with sedation.
How do I prepare?
Liquid diet the day before, bowel-cleansing solution as instructed. Report blood thinners.
What happens afterwards?
Report immediately; polyp analysis 7–14 days.
